ProfileMapSkegness is located on the south-east coast of Lincolnshire, approximately 135 miles north of London and 23 miles north-east of Boston on the A52.

The town has a population of around 14,500 and is within the East Lindsey District of Lincolnshire which covers an area of approximately 600 square miles.

Transformed from a tiny fishing village into a holiday town during the late 19th-century, it is a popular seaside resort with a 6-mile long beach and one of the country's largest holiday camps. Primarily renowned for its bracing sea breeze and Jolly Fisherman mascot there are numerous visitor attractions and some notable historic buildings in the vicinity.

Historically the town's economy has been based upon its position as a seaside resort and this continues to be the case with its traditional tourist facilities having been enhanced greatly in recent years with the development of new visitor attractions such as the Fantasy Island leisure complex.

According to the Dictionary of English Place Names (A.D.Mills) there are two possible derivatives for the name Skegness. It may mean 'beard-shaped promontory (nes)' or alternatively 'promontory of a man called Skeggi' from Old Scandinavian. The name appeared in the 12th-century as Sceggenesse.
