ProfileMapArbroath is located on the east coast of Scotland, in the county of Angus, approximately 475 miles north of London and 18 miles north-east of Dundee.

The town has a population of around 25,000. Administratively it is within the district of Angus which covers an area of approximately 2,182 sq kms.

Set around its attractive harbour it is the largest town in Angus and a fishing port renowned for its 'Smokies' (smoked haddock). It is also a popular seaside resort with good sands. There are some notable historic buildings, including the famous 12th-century Arbroath Abbey where the Scottish declaration of independence was signed in 1320.

The town was settled during the 12th century following the founding of the abbey in 1178. It was made a royal burgh in 1599.

Historically the town's economy was based upon fishing, and the flax and engineering industries. Today fishing continues, to a lesser extent, and industry ranges from fish food processing to engineering and textiles.

The name Arbroath derives from 'Aber Brothock' the burn which runs into the sea here.
